As Spyda Leano said, “Thank you for coming everybody and let’s do this again.” As Danny Casaquit said, “It was a good day.”
On this blessed Sunday upwards of 40 different types of VWs from Vintage VW Club of Hawaii, Westside Ka’ahui Braddahood, and Hawaiian VW Outlaws gathered at Kamehemeha Shopping Ctr. top parking lot. A little ‘ua’ came down as Matt & Elke Gillooly of Westside Ka’ahui Braddahood led us in a ‘pule’ for a safe journey and return home. We knew that the little rain was Tony shedding a little tear because we were doing this for him.
Buggies came out in droves — Spyda Leano, Todd Matsumoto, Sam Martin, Glenn Yahiku (hotVWs Magazine), Mike Archer (hotVWs Magazine), Danny Casaquit, Joey Kekoa, Ryan Okabe, Brandy Les Kaneshiro, Hector Comesario, Glenn Soriano, Lindo Molina, Derek Bigornio, Terry Gabriel, Lisa Miller, Wade, Alex, a blue and silver Buggy (hotVWs Magazine), and a yellow Buggy. Tony’s good friend, Eric Shimabuku, came out and spent the day with us. Todd Matsumoto, another good friend of Tony traveled from afar — literally 50 yards to Kamehameha Shopping Ctr. On the other hand, Richard Oppenheimer with Mattlie Davis, also Tony’s good friends came from the Westside. Other notable attendees paying tribute were of course Tony Young, Jr. with his crew; and Tony Young’s good friends Sam Martin and Brian Kim and John Parks and Jon Souza. Unable to attend but in spirit were Keoki Moore, Angie Cariaga, Kawika Yee, and Gordon Taculao.
First stop was Tantalus lookout then to Marine Corps Training Area Bellows in Waimanalo both of which were Tony and Spyda’s stomping grounds. VeeDubbers made their way to Tantalus lookout, parked their VDubs and got their camera and video camera at the ready because they knew that something special was about to happen. Capturing Spyda’s wheelie — Jon Souza’s shot here or Emelie Ellazar Soriano’s pix here. Todd with Tyler Matsumoto and Flyn Levi and Michael Archer and Mike Whaley and Frankie Abreu, Ed Kaukane, Joey Kekoa, Wade and Jona did their ritual in honor of Tony Young.
Cruisers then made their way to Ala Moana Beach Park then through Kalakaua Ave in Waikiki through Kahala then to Waimanalo and finished the day with a cold one. Others cruised around through H-3. See Tess’ Facebook live of Henry Ader & Tess Roldan and Alfred & Janet Decierdo (hotVWs Magazine) here.
All in all in honor of a good man who is truly missed, everyone paid their tribute in their own way and enjoyed the cruise and camaraderie among the VW close-knit ohana.Todd Matusmoto and Tony Young, Jr.
Mark you calendar for Sun. 7/8/2017 for next year’s ‘Underdog’ event.
